WITH its summer cottages the size of palaces and its century-old status as a yachting capital, Newport is the quintessential playground of American aristocracy. Still, this harbor town is more than model ships and mansions. The waterfront — with views of wide, tentacled Narragansett Bay — is still Newport’s soul, and the estates along Bellevue Avenue haven’t lost their Gilded Age glamour. But in a town that seems, on the surface, so untouched by time, there’s an undercurrent of youthful rebelliousness.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Measles, a highly contagious disease considered rare in the U.S., has turned up in the Ocean State.

Rhode Island’s Department of Health announced Friday that a European woman in her 20s visiting the state has been diagnosed with the respiratory illness.

A physician diagnosed the woman, who was not identified, after she sought treatment for a fever and a rash. The Department of Health says the woman flew to New York from an unidentified country in Europe Tuesday, then drove to Rhode Island.

The problem with those other three cities is that after your commute, you’re still in them.

Seriously.

What lessons did we learn from the historic floods of March, 2010?

Of the many issues still facing us one year later, the floods certainly underscored the risks of obsolete and deteriorating dams impeding the natural flow of rivers and streams throughout the region. Rhode Island has 671 dams, many of which have outlived their useful life.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island has the fourth-highest proportion of structurally deficient bridges in the country, a Washington-based coalition said.

Basing its conclusions on federal figures, the group Transportation for America said that of Rhode Island’s 754 bridges, 163, or 21.6 percent, are structurally deficient.

That puts Rhode Island three states behind Pennsylvania, where 27 percent of the bridges are deficient, the highest in the nation.
